Hendrick's Gin The Awakening Sydney

Hendrick’s Gin The Awakening: an immersive theatrical experience, with cocktails

To tell you too much about Hendrick’s Gin The Awakening will be to ruin the surprise. How does one accurately convey how magical, mysterious, and surprising something is — without giving it all away?

Having experienced a Hendrick’s Gin popup in Melbourne a couple of years ago, I knew I was in for a treat. But The Awakening blew my expectations out of the water.

Every detail is accounted for. We met at COMMUNE’s Waterloo location, starting our journey sitting in wooden chairs in a large warehouse. Mimes were there. Mimes! And that was the least weird and fantastical part of the evening.

Sessions are staggered 20 minutes apart, so small groups of people are led through a procession of rooms. We started off by walking past a theatrical woman (top hat, long skirt and all), who guided us past a velvet curtain and into a dark wood-paneled room. Handed a delicious G&T — and I say that as someone who doesn’t usually care for them — we wondered what we were in for.

Were I to tell you, I’d spoil the magical experience. You simply must attend to go on The Awakening yourself. We found out afterwards that the entire setup was constructed the day before it opened — and that an immersive company joined forces with a theatre company. Add in the special Hendrick’s touch and the alchemy turns everything into gold.

At the end, we mingled over divinely delicious mulled cranberry/port/Hendrick’s gin cocktails. No one could stop talking about their journey.

This is truly one of the best things you could do with your weekend. So hasten to get one of the last remaining tickets and join Hendrick’s Gin The Awakening for yourself.
