Sass & Bide made a triumphant return to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia this season to showcase their Resort 18 collection ‘Fiesta Barcelona.’ Transforming Carriageworks into an enchanting space inspired by the Casa Batlló they definitely made their mark. Taking centre stage was a huge square filled with over a thousand square metres of white Papier Peau De Dragon. Guests were seated around all four sides of the impressive installation and the models paraded the entire perimeter giving the audience a 360 degree view.
Black and white both featured heavily throughout the collection with block colour looks dispersed between a soft colour palette of blues and peaches. Splashes of gold were a welcome pop of glamour along with a generous amount of handmade sequin fringing.
Asymmetry was a key theme in many of the looks, whether it was a waterfall top cascading down one side, mismatched gold earrings or a one shouldered dress. The seam lines often followed suit and lay diagonally across the body.
Hair was either low maintenance and soft with a centre parting or sectioned and intricately braided tight to the head. Small gold hair rings were used to loop braids into clean simple ponytails. Skin was dewy and fresh and any additional makeup was kept to a minimum.
It was refreshing to see a great mix of diversity on the catwalk as they used models of all ethnicities. It’s easy to get used to seeing teenagers on the runway but Sass & Bide chose to use a selection of older models mixed with younger girls to reflect their customer.
The team behind Sass & Bide including head designer Sophia Berman and show director Mark Vassallo created something truly special with this show. A stunning collection of fluid silhouettes and shimmering fabrics that captured the essence of the energetic city Barcelona.
