Robert Forster and Zan Rowe: On Friendship

How can we build our capacity to be good listeners through the power of music? Spend Sunday morning with renowned musicians Lior and Stu Hunter.

In our social media saturated world it has never been easier to ‘connect’ with another person, yet to truly establish a life-long friendship remains a rare privilege. What is at the heart of a good friendship? How can we navigate the loyalty and vulnerability required to maintain a deep, creative friendship? In this special In Conversation event, musician Robert Forster (The Go-Betweens) will explore his friendship with long time creative collaborator Grant McLennan and help us understand the core values underpinning this intense, creative, sometimes fraught friendship that represented a genuine meeting of artistic minds.

The songwriting partnership of Forster and McLennan was a little like an Australian version of Lennon and McCartney. The pair wrote all of the celebrated band’s distinctively original material and shared the credits, alternating on lead vocals. A band that enjoyed worldwide critical acclaim through the eighties and then reformed in 1999 recording a further three albums, The Go-Betweens were described by a critic from New York’s Village Voice in 2005 as having ‘the greatest songwriting partnership working today’.

As one of Australia’s most respected musicians, Robert will share with The School of Life his intense, creative and sometimes fraught friendship with McLennan through this very special conversation event with music journalist Zan Rowe.
