NOMAD: Wine Cellar Meets Restaurant

It was cold, raining, and freezing; as I walked through the dark streets of Surry Hills.

It was one of those moments when you couldn’t remember why you accepted your friend’s invitation rather than going straight back to your warm bed. But in the middle of Foster Street lay the perfect place to warm up your fingers and your heart: Nomad.

My friend was waiting for me at the bar, and as my nose and toes start to defrost, the good vibes of the place shook off my grumpy mood in no time. The high ceiling of the spacious room — busy but not too loud — the light wood complementing the dark metal furniture, coupled with a bar immersed in wine shelves. The place was modern and cosy.

The mouthwatering smell coming from the open kitchen in the middle of the room was to die for. It was time to take a look at the menu. Whether you’re starving or after something light, Nomad seemed to have something for everyone. From the garden to the grill; everything was fresh, colourful, homemade, and locally-sourced!

Fish Pastilla, Wood Roasted Pork, Lamb Rump, Zucchini Flowers and Honey Truffle, Duck & Pork Rillette. ‘Stupid me’, I thought, ‘I shouldn’t have had such a late lunch!’ I didn’t know what to choose from, and the 100% Aussie wine list was not making it any easier.

As a self-respecting Frenchie, born and raised in Burgundy, I  knew absolutely nothing about Australian wines. So I let the sommelier greet me with a little tasting and asked him to find the perfect pairing to my cucumber-tomato-radish-sumac Fattoush Salad (a glass of 2015, Hersey Wines Pinot Pinot Chard rosé  did the trick).

Atmospheric location, perfect service, nice wines, incredible food. I’ll definitely skip lunch next time and come back on an empty stomach to taste more of the Nomad’s delicacies (starting with the juicy wood-roasted pork that caught my eye from the neighbouring table).
