Salsa in Sydney with Salsa Republic

Salsa

One in five people in Sydney dance salsa. Ok, I may have entirely made up that stat, but I’d be far from surprised if that number undershot reality. Sydney has a salsa fetish – in the best possible way. Be it thanks to the abundance of latinos or weather so gorgeous it just makes you want to groove (as an ex-Melburnian), there’s a salsa night on every night, and none are lacking for a crowd.

Then again, how could anyone not love Salsa? It’s a fun, friendly, endorphin fueled alternative to a session at Fitness First or an awkward Meetup.com outing.  With Establishment’s Salsa Tuesdays beckoning, we decided to find out what all the fuss was about, with Salsa Republic.

“Six weeks and six classes, to go from zero to salsero – could it be done? In the spirit of Barney Stinson, I accepted the challenge.”

For anyone that’s been to school or uni, you know a class is only as fun as those you take it with. Well, stepping into salsa class day one at Salsa Republic was a mix of relief and excitement. Everyone was fun, young, and outgoing; much like a get-together with friends of friends – people you’d actually go dancing with!

It’s also safe to say, your course is only as fun as your teacher (although salsa wouldn’t need much help in the fun department). Well, you couldn’t fault our instructor for his lack of trying, nonetheless. If a little dry humor is all we needed to break the ice, his effortlessly dance-integrated comedy routines had the ice break, melt, and evaporate away.

Past the jokes and the socialising, we were all there to get dance-floor ready in T-6 weeks. This was easier for some than others, but our instructors seemed to know just how to bridge that gap, somewhat surprisingly well! Be it the guy with the two left feet or that girl who was born to dance, the perfect mix of pacing and repetition got us to the point where everyone was dancing in unison by the end of every class – like a well-oiled salsa machine.

The course at Salsa Republic was fast, fun, challenging, and left you craving for more. The six weeks went by quickly – rather too quickly – and wrapped up with a teaser for what was in store for level two. As we had our ‘one last dance’ that rainy night, we realized we were hooked. We’d come out of the course as card-carrying, veritable salsaholics; ready to get our groove on.
