July’s Top 3 Films

As the winter months grip the city firmer still with its cold, unrelenting fingers; there’s no better feeling that comes to mind than cozying up into a warm theater seat, popcorn et al, and watching a first-rate flick. The Plus Ones’ film guru Gina has curated the top three reasons for you to go back through those beckoning theater doors this month.

Inside out

Director: Pete Docter, Ronaldo Del Carmen /Country: U.S.A / 94 mins/ Animation

You will never think of your own emotions and your brain the same way again.

Inside Out Image

Pixar´s latest film Inside Out cleverly and beautifully depicts what happens inside the brain of Riley, a little girl who is going through lots of changes in her life. Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Fear and Anger are the protagonist of this amazing story of the feelings and memories Riley experiences while she is moving between towns, enrolling in a new school and joining a new hockey team with knew friends. As her life passes the film transports us into her brain and somehow teaches us how different feelings and emotions take over depending on what we are going through. As well as this it also shows how we are constantly producing new memories that sometimes remain within us forever yet at other times they just simply vanish as we grow older. This is a film not to be missed and a film for opening our understanding on the science behind our own brains and emotions. It is also a film for expanding our capacity of introspection and self compassion and above all a film which guarantees us being entertained for one a half hours while we possibly reflect on re-setting priorities in our own lives.

Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief

Director: Alex Gibney Contry:U.S.A / 119 mins / Documentary

Ever wondered where the story between Tom Cruise and Scientology started and why?

Going Clear Image

With sold out sessions at the Sydney Film Festival 2015, Alex Gibney´s documentary takes you through the history, the success and the evil side of Scientology that can arguably be called ¨a cult¨ rather than a religion. Based on Lawrence Wright’s book under the same name as the doco, this film tells us about L. Ron Hubbard and what drove him to create Scientology and how his rather destructive personal life gave birth to one of the most successful and profitable religions on earth. With incredible interviews from ex-members of the cult, along with excellent supporting footage and archive material, the story you are seeing keeps you craving for more. Details and absurd facts are released in a dramatic and thrilling rhythm. This also includes the role John Travolta and Tom Cruise played within the ¨religion¨ and the tricks Scientologist headquarters did to make them stay advocates for the cult. This is a documentary for people thirsty for the truth and the way fad trends work in the modern world. Plus it premiered at Sundance Film Festival early this year so its got to be good.

Wild Tales/ Relatos Salvajes

Director: Damián Szifrón /Country: Argentina / 122 mins/  Dark comedy / Spanish with English Subtitles

One of the most popular films ever made in Latin America, Wild Tales left us mute and then feeling guilty for laughing for days afterwards!

Wild Tales Image

This is the perfect compilation of small and smartly told tales on revenge. Set in Argentina, each tale transports the audience amongst various social problems in which any of us could be the protagonist. The stories are not only impregnated with amazing black humour, but great performances, fine cinematography and a thrillingness that makes this film one of our favourite picks at the moment. Argentinean director, Damián Szifrón competed at the Oscars with this film nominated for best foreign film and it has been a blockbuster since its commercial release in cinemas. It also showed at the Spanish Film Festival-Australia 2015 becoming one of the favourites for audiences. The film has such a rich array of characters it is very difficult to have a favourite. For me it is impossible to pick between ¨Bombita¨- played by award winner Ricardo Darín, the crazy bride, the posh pretentious guy or the greedy gardener. They are just out of this world!
