Have you ever built flat-pack furniture? Now imagine doing it in front of an audience, under pressure, in a race against another person, while your opponent gets to throw increasingly ridiculous obstacles in your way.
Welcome to IKEA WARS.
Part comedy, part game show and part endurance sport for people who have ever stared blankly at an instruction manual wondering where the hell Step 7 went, IKEA WARS turns one of modern life’s most frustrating rituals into genuinely entertaining theatre.
The premise is beautifully simple: two performers, two pieces of IKEA furniture and one winner. The catch is that the furniture is only part of the challenge. At various points, competitors are hit with sabotages that might involve T-Rex arms, water-laden hurricanes or, most cruelly, losing access to all their nuts and bolts for a minute. In this environment, an Allen key isn’t just a tool. It’s a blessing from the Scandinavian gods.
Watching someone assemble furniture is not normally something I’d describe as riveting, but the competitive element completely changes the equation. It has the strange tension of watching someone reverse parallel park, except the car has been replaced by a bookshelf and the audience is actively willing them to find the right screw.
The joy comes from the combination of skill, chaos and audience energy. You find yourself becoming surprisingly invested in whether a particular panel is facing the right way, whether that missing bolt will turn up and, ultimately, whether someone can somehow finish before their opponent despite the increasingly absurd attempts to derail them.
IKEA WARS understands exactly what Fringe does best: take an everyday idea, turn the dial to eleven and invite an audience along for the ride. It’s silly, physical, interactive and gloriously low-stakes.
If you’ve ever assembled flat-pack furniture, you’ll recognise the pain. If you haven’t, this may be the closest you’ll get to understanding why everyone else looks so traumatised.
IKEA Wars is at Melbourne Fringe until 4 October 2026.
