Weekday, Party, or Fancy? Drop Shop has you covered

Weekday, Party, or Fancy? Drop Shop has you covered

If you’ve ever walked into a bottle shop and felt like you needed a PhD in viticulture just to pick up a bottle for dinner, you aren’t alone. We’ve been buying booze the same way for decades, staring at endless rows of grape varieties and regions, hoping to guess which one won’t disappoint the guests.

Thankfully, the folks behind Drop Shop on Lygon Street in Brunswick East have finally decided to put us out of our misery. It’s a tiny, funky, neon-lit corner store ‘bottle O’ that brings a level of curation that actually feels modern.

The genius here isn’t in how many bottles they cram onto the shelves, in fact, it’s the opposite. With only enough room for about 150 labels, founders Dan Sims, Courtney Keegan, and Luke McKinnon have been ruthlessly selective. Instead of overwhelming you, they’ve organized the entire store by how we actually live: Weekday ($15–25), Party ($25–40), and Fancy ($40+). It’s the same simple logic for the beer, RTDs, and spirits, stripping away the visual clutter and “wine lecture” vibe that makes most liquor retail feel like a confusing chore.

The result is a space that feels more like an Aesop store than a traditional booze warehouse. It’s clean, sleek, and it’s arguably the most efficient way to grab a drink in Melbourne right now. Whether you need a reliable midweek pour or a showstopper for a weekend dinner party, the guesswork is gone. It’s rare to find a bottle shop where the experience of shopping is just as good as the product you’re walking out with, but Drop Shop has nailed it.

Finally, a place that understands you want convenience and quality, and you’d rather spend your time drinking the wine than agonizing over the label.
