Nowhere: Rising 2026

Nowhere: Rising 2026

Nowhere is the kind of performance that lingers long after the lights come up. Created and performed by Khalid Abdalla, this moving “anti-biography” arrives at RISING as a deeply personal story that somehow feels universal, stretching across generations, countries and identities. It traces the threads of family, migration and belonging, asking a question that feels increasingly relevant in a connected world: where is home when your story spans continents?

What makes Nowhere so extraordinary is the nuance Abdalla brings to every moment. Best known to many through film and television, here he strips away any distance between performer and audience. The result is intimate without ever becoming small. His story becomes a mirror, reflecting the experiences of anyone who has felt caught between places, cultures or versions of themselves.

The title itself becomes the work’s central idea. We are everywhere and nowhere. Rooted and displaced. Connected and searching. Rather than offering easy answers, Nowhere embraces the complexity of modern identity and finds beauty within it.

The production’s multimedia elements are woven seamlessly into the storytelling. Video, sound and imagery don’t sit beside the performance, they become part of its DNA. The audience is immersed, drawn into memories and moments that feel both vast and deeply human. At times you are observing. At times you are participating. By the end, you are undeniably moved.

What is perhaps most impressive is the calibre of craftsmanship on display. Every element feels considered, every transition purposeful. This is world-class theatre that trusts its audience and rewards that trust with emotional depth, intellectual curiosity and genuine heart.

RISING has built a reputation for bringing ambitious international work to Melbourne, but Nowhere stands apart as one of the festival’s most affecting experiences. It is rare to encounter a piece of theatre woven with such care and sophistication. Rarer still to find one that leaves you feeling both smaller in the scale of history and more connected to the people around you.

Nowhere runs until 7 June 2026
