IMAX Premiere: Mandalorian & Grogu

IMAX Premiere: Mandalorian & Grogu

There’s a particular kind of electricity that hums through a cinema when the words “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…” appear on screen. With The Mandalorian & Grogu, that spark is alive and well, crackling with nostalgia, heart and blaster-fire chaos in equal measure.

From its opening moments, the film taps directly into the shared memory bank of Star Wars fans. There are shades of the icy desperation of Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back’s Battle of Hoth, while other sequences carry echoes of Darth Vader’s terrifying entrance aboard Leia’s ship in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. These are not hollow callbacks tossed in like space confetti. They feel lovingly stitched into the adventure, little hyperspace lanes connecting generations of fandom.

The action scenes roar along with the energy fans have come to expect from the franchise, but the quieter moments are what truly anchor the film. Grogu continues to be the tiny green gravitational force at the centre of it all, pulling warmth and humour into even the most intense sequences. And once again, Pedro Pascal proves how much emotion can be carried through voice alone. Beneath the beskar armour, he gives Din Djarin a weary tenderness that keeps the story grounded, even when ships are exploding overhead.

Star Wars fans are famous for bringing sky-high expectations to every new chapter. This film works best when embraced for what it is: a thrilling, heartfelt ride through a universe built on hope, myth and imagination.

Perhaps the most moving part at the IMAX Melbourne premiere wasn’t even on screen. It was seeing parents sitting beside their younglings in the cinema, sharing laughs, gasps and wide-eyed wonder together. In a world that can often feel painfully grounded, The Mandalorian & Grogu reminds us how powerful it is to believe in adventure somewhere out among the stars.

The Mandalorian & Grogu screens nationally from 20 May 2026.
