Lasers, live synth and violence: Terminator 2 Judgement Day at Hamer Hall

Terminator 2 turns thirty-five this year. In honour of the anniversary, Hear My Eyes is giving the film a theatrical makeover. With a live synth score and laser lights, the cinema-collective leaned into the sci-fi elements of the film to great effect.

A buzzy crowd filled Hamer Hall for the Wednesday night premiere. An atypical audience for the venue, it was exciting to see so many people at the arts centre for this film/performance hybrid. Hear My Eyes brings the movie viewing experience to new heights. Belgian electronic music producer, Peter Van Hoesen, created an all-synth score. A team from the Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS) Synthesiser Ensemble performed alongside Van Hoesen with vintage synthesisers and expert precision. And laser light artist Robin Fox completed the sensory experience.

Despite having seen the movie multiple times, I found myself engrossed in the action. The experience was thoughtfully considered and rehearsed. The audio-visual syncing was on-point, with the music and lights enhancing the drama (rather than distracting from it). At points I could feel my seat vibrating. Plus, who doesn’t love seeing iconic chase scenes in 4k on a big screen.

Joining a few hundred film fans for a mash-up of a nostalgic 90s sci-fi in a lush venue prompted my plus one to reflect on the days of yore: when the viewers primarily watched films in the cinema instead of a laptop.

Tickets are pricey. But if you can swing it, I recommend it. Hip, arty, unexpected and well executed. The Hear My Eyes production reminded me why I love living in Melbourne.
