Zip-Lines and Smash Burgers: Arcane Fairies is the Dive Bar We Deserve

Arcane Fairies Bar MelbourneMelbourne has a long-standing, slightly obsessive relationship with theme bars. We’ve sipped cocktails in fake Narnia wardrobes and pretended to be in 1920s speakeasies more times than I can count, but usually, you have to choose between a “concept” and a genuinely good night out.

Enter Arcane Fairies. Located right in the heart of the CBD on Lonsdale Street, this place is the latest brain-child of Steve Thomas (the man behind Storyville and Pawn & Co), which basically means you should expect the unexpected. It’s a speakeasy-style rock ’n’ roll lair where towering fairies and glowing specimen jars look down on you while a jukebox pumps out the kind of dive bar classics that make you want to stay for “just one more” for three hours straight.

The real showstopper here, and the thing you’ll definitely see all over your feed, is the motorised zip-line system. It’s overhead engineering genius that delivers your cocktails directly from the bar to your booth. There is a specific, childish joy in watching a perfectly mixed elixir glide through a twisted nest of decor and land smoothly at your table. It turns every round into a piece of performance art, which is much better than awkwardly hovering at the bar.

If it’s your birthday (or if you’re just feeling particularly charming), do yourself a favour and ask the bartenders for a key to the bar. I won’t spoil the mystery, but let’s just say there’s a hidden surprise built into the venue that involves a bit of mischief and a lot of “how did they do that?”

For the food, they’ve tapped celebrity chef Jake Warhurst, whose resume reads like a VIP guest list for the Met Gala, we’re talking past gigs for Drake, George Clooney, and even a stint on Richard Branson’s private island. He’s brought that high-flying energy to a late-night menu that is pure indulgence. While his cult-favourite smash burgers and Nashville hot chicken are the obvious heavy hitters, the vegetarian options are actually a highlight rather than an afterthought. The Impossible veggie burger holds its own against the beef with the same messy, “Warface Sauce” glory, making it a legitimate pilgrimage site for the city’s late-night legends regardless of their dietary choices.

Between the flying drinks, the secret keys, and the tasty burgers, Arcane Fairies feels like a fever dream in the best possible way. It’s irreverent, a little bit wild, and exactly the kind of unfiltered fun the CBD needs right now. It manages to pull off the “theatrical” vibe without losing that gritty, high-energy rock ’n’ roll soul that makes a bar actually worth returning to. Just make sure you keep an eye on the ceiling… you never know when your next drink is going to come flying in from above.

Arcane Fairies is open now at 185 Lonsdale Street Melbourne. Check out their website for opening hours and to book a table.
