The Fantastic Four: First Steps

The Fantastic Four have always been Marvel’s “First Family,” synonymous with cosmic exploration and scientific marvel since their 1961 debut.

Their long-awaited arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a key integration after Disney’s acquisition of Fox, marks a pivotal moment for what we can expect from the sprawling superhero franchise.

My plus one and I got to experience this monumental debut at IMAX Melbourne which was fitting for a film this big. IMAX’s colossal 32-meter screen, coupled with 4K laser projection and 12-channel surround sound really does immerse you in the film that apparently was shot for the IMAX format.

With such a big screen, it was necessary to fill it with some larger than life villains. “First Steps” places the expecting couple Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman, her brother Human Torch and their best friend The Thing up against their most daunting challenge yet as they defend Earth from Galactus and Silver Surfer.

Directed by Matt Shakman who also helped bring to life ‘WandaVision‘ on Disney+, this new look “Fantastic Four” cleverly bypasses the origin story that we have all got to know over the previously lackluster incarnations of their story on screen.

Instead, it drops us into a retro-futuristic 1960s where the team is already established as heroes and we can learn about their origin through a snazzy TV show intro and get right into the action.

This bold choice allows the film to immediately jump into the action and focus on their unique family dynamics and their place in a multiverse timeline we haven’t seen before. That’s right – this isn’t our regular Marvel universe! The retro-futuristic set designs, costumes and style of action are very refreshing and a feast for the eyes.

The amazing cast, featuring Pedro Pascal as Reed, Vanessa Kirby as Sue, Joseph Quinn as Johnny, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben, brings a fresh energy to these iconic roles and there really is a nice chemistry between them all. Throw a Fantastic baby into the mix and suddenly the stakes are even higher for the odd-family.

Of course with anything Marvel, this isn’t just a standalone film but a critical gateway for the next phase of the MCU, introducing concepts and characters vital to the ongoing Multiverse Saga, which we’re now more excited to see than ever.

Fantastic Four: First Steps” successfully balances the humour, joy and wonder of the comics with great exploration of these characters complex family dynamics and friendships. We’re excited to see how it sets up their future in the wider MCU and it truly does feel like the magic is back at Marvel.
