M3GAN was a surprise hit, when it came out back in 2023. From its witty dialogue, campy horror and genuinely interesting premise, both audiences and critics (us included) loved it.
So my plus one and I, alongside an absolutely packed cinema, had a lot of expectations going in to see the sequel, M3GAN 2.0.
The story takes place two years after M3GAN, a super cute but kinda creepy marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous rampage. Its creator, Gemma, has become an advocate for government oversight of AI.
Unbeknownst to her, a defence contractor has created a military-grade weapon, the ultimate infiltration spy which shares a few too many similarities to the creature she helped build.
However, as this new robot’s self-awareness increases, it becomes less interested in taking orders. Hoping to stop it before the fate of the world is sealed, Gemma decides to resurrect M3GAN, making it faster, stronger, and more lethal.
Much of the original creative team and cast are returning for the sequel, and they have done a stellar job at capturing all the things we loved from the first film, while bringing us a fresh take.
This isn’t a carbon copy of the first film by any means.
The comedy, campy one liners and uncanny valley horror are all perfectly captured, with a surprising new element – action.
For much of the film, we leave the quiet forests and Gemma’s home featured so heavily in the first film, and venture onto a bigger stage with plenty of action scenes that would rival most major films in the genre.
M3GAN still steals every scene she is in with her one liners, creepy expressions and odd mannerisms. There is one scene where she bursts into an ill-timed musical number which is probably the most creepy thing she does the whole film.
M3GAN 2.0 is a super fun and fast action film that goes beyond the norm, with a surprisingly good grasp of current AI fears and nerdy tech in-jokes.
While the big scares from the first film are mostly non-existent, it’s the campy humour that really sets this film apart.
With superb special effects, you’ll believe that the tech behind M3GAN and her counterpart is coming to our homes sooner than you think. M3GAN 2.0 is set to become another cult classic and is a must-see in cinemas.
