Forty years. Let that sink in.
Forty years since Les Misérables first graced the stage, and now with a fresh reimagining of this epic tale for the grand scale of arena performances Les Mis is about to be seen by a whole new generation.
For those unfamiliar (though we suspect you’re not!), Les Misérables plunges us into 19th-century France, following the tumultuous life of Jean Valjean, an ex-convict striving for redemption against the relentless pursuit of Inspector Javert.
It’s a sweeping story of love, loss, sacrifice and resistance amidst social injustice and revolution.
What makes this production stand out isn’t just the sheer scale of it.
The design and lighting teams have cleverly utilised Rod Laver Arena to create breathtaking visuals.
Think dynamic projections and lighting that immerse you in the Parisian streets and barricades in a way a traditional stage can’t quite replicate. The sound, too, is immense, ensuring every soaring note and emotional whisper resonates throughout the venue.
While this is a world tour destined for Japan, Taiwan, China, and beyond, these Australian dates feel particularly special thanks to the incredible lineup.
Leading the charge, the formidable role of Jean Valjean is played by the phenomenal Alfie Boe. And then there’s the iconic role of the unwavering constable Javert played expertly by Michael Ball who brings a gravitas to Javert that is absolutely captivating.
But let’s be honest, a significant buzz surrounds the return of the hilarious Matt Lucas as the morally ambiguous Thénardier, alongside Australia’s own musical theatre royalty, Marina Prior, as Madame Thénardier.
Their comedic timing and stage presence are absolute gold, providing much-needed moments of levity amidst the drama and death. Seeing this beloved duo on stage together is a real treat for Aussie audiences.
Adding to the local flavour are a talented group of Australian children sharing the roles of Gavroche and Little Cosette, a lovely touch that grounds this global spectacle right here in Melbourne.
This isn’t just another touring production; it’s a reimagining of a classic on a whole new scale, and Melbourne is lucky enough to be one of its special stops. If you’ve ever been moved by the story of Les Misérables, experiencing it in this arena setting, with this exceptional cast including the brilliant Matt Lucas and Marina Prior, is an absolute must-see.
