A decadent night of burlesque at the Whoop Dee Doo Revue

What happens when a sultry venue and some of Melbourne’s finest Burlesque performers collide? We found the answer at The Whoop Dee Doo Revue.

Billed as a double feature, the early show features a live jazz band and classic mid-century burlesque striptease. However, it was the late show, described as “neo-burlesque spectacle” that caught my eye. My plus one and I parked in a dark dead end in North Melbourne at 9:45pm, and made our way towards the only light on the street, like moths to a flame. Two smiling, bedazzled Whoop Dee Doo crew greeted us at the door, and set the scene for a sparkling night. The venue, VIVA Melbourne, exudes retro Vegas vibes. Patrons sat 0n red banquettes and staff clad in bustiers and bow ties served cocktails and champagne.

The Whoop Dee Doo Revue attracted a diverse late night crowd. Suits, sequins, and queer performers filled the seats, all anxious for a good time.

Our host Velma Vouloir kicked off the evening with perfectly coifed hair and all the sass and confidence of Dita Von Tease. The late show line-up ‘Another Late Night Revue’, features the same performers as the early show with all new acts. The imaginative performers showcased their creativity with a variety of energetic, silly and artistic routines. However, one thing remained consistent throughout: the calibre of the performers.

I’m accustomed to seeing experimental burlesque in grungy bars. (No shade here, dive bars are some of my best friends.) But VIVA’s fit-for-purpose theatre elevated the experience.

The performers rotate monthly, but here’s hoping next month’s audience also gets a taste of Rhys Lighting. After witnessing their award winning number set to the song ‘Hell,’ one audience member loudly proclaimed, “That was diabolically f*cked!” Other standout’s included Miss Maple Rose’s creative carnival staging, Sham’s energetic dance number, and Iva Grande commanding the stage in a flurry of hot pink.

Quality productions values paired with the weird and wonderful burlesque. The Whoop Dee Doo Revue is a recipe for success. Whilst I only saw the late show for this review (or should I say, revue?), I’m already planning my return to see the classic burlesque show too.
