Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is a bold and chilling retelling of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent horror classic of the same name.
This new adaptation isn’t merely a remake; it’s a deep dive into the gothic soul of the original, reimagined for a modern audience.
Eggers, known for his meticulous attention to detail and atmospheric storytelling, has crafted a film that is both visually stunning and emotionally resonant. If you have had the pleasure of watching his excellent films The Northman and The Lighthouse you will go into this film with equally high expectations just like we did.
Staying true to the source material, Nicholas Hoult’s character Thomas Hutter is a young newlywed to Ellen. Seeking his fortune, he is hired to be the solicitor of a new home for a mysterious Count in far off Transylvania.
The dark, brooding cinematography and haunting score create a palpable sense of dread, while the performances are uniformly excellent. Bill Skarsgård is particularly terrifying as the titular vampire Count Orlok, his gaunt visage and otherworldly demeanor bringing the character to life in a truly unforgettable way.
The all-star cast also includes Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Emma Corrin who are all excellent, however it was Willem Dafoe as the unhinged Prof. Albin Eberhart Von Franz that stole every scene he was in.
While the film may not deviate significantly from the source material, Eggers’ unique vision elevates the story to new heights and modern audiences.
The pacing is deliberately slow, allowing the tension to build steadily. Set on location in Czechia, every shot is absolutely gorgeous and grotesque, with some truly beautiful cold and windswept locations we’ll want to see for ourselves one day.
Nosferatu is a must-see for fans of horror, gothic cinema, and anyone who appreciates a well-crafted film and a slow-burn scare.
