F Christmas: A Festive F**k You to Traditional Holiday Cheer

It’s not hard to feel a bit disillusioned by Christmas. After all, Australians use more than 150,000 km of wrapping paper during the festive season. That’s nearly enough paper to wrap around Earth’s equator four times! It’s also estimated that $900 billion worth of presents will go to waste.

I personally hear those stats and say Fuck Christmas, and it looks like I’m not alone.

F Christmas is a new all-star queer variety show that gives the middle finger to capitalism and the overconsumption of the holiday season.

Featuring aerial elves, a bon bon telling bad jokes, a slutty elf on a shelf, the saddest polar bear in on a melting North Pole, off-brand Father Christmas and the carol hosts from hell – this is a Xmas celebration we can get around.

The show is brought to life at the iconic Malthouse Theatre by Fat Fruit, a Melbourne based independent arts company creating queer and body positive performances who’s shows are created collaboratively with queers, feminists and culturally diverse artists from varied artforms and perspectives.

This show transforms the Malthouse into a festive wonderland, adorned with glittery tinsel, oversized ornaments, and a touch of subversive flair.

The stage is ringed in dead Christmas trees, used wrapping paper and sparkly festive lighting. Like most Malthouse shows, it feels like an immersive experience.

The performances are equally captivating, with a talented ensemble of artists pushing the boundaries of theater, circus, and cabaret.

From gravity-defying aerial acts to hilarious comedy sketches and a live band (shout out to the cover of Amyl & the Sniffers), the show offers a diverse range of entertainment that would be great for anyone not scared of a few nipples, bare bums, full frontal nudity and the rare pubic hair. This is unapologetically queer and adult.

The heart of F Christmas lies in its subversive spirit. It’s a show that doesn’t shy away from challenging societal norms and expectations. After all, for many queer people the holidays are actually quite fucked – you might not have family or a home, traditional norms don’t apply to you, or a host of other reasons for feeling less cheery. This show calls all of that out while still being truly hilarious.

It’s a celebration of queer identity, body positivity, and the power of community.

By subverting traditional Christmas tropes and embracing a more inclusive and alternative approach, the show offers a refreshing and empowering experience while always aiming to punch up.

It’s a holiday show that dares to be different. Whether you’re a fan of punk rock, drag, variety shows, circus or simply looking for a unique and unforgettable night out, F Christmas is sure to delight, shock and surprise.
