The first Moana film from 2016 was an instant hit, captivating children (and parents) with its stunning animation, catchy songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda, and heartwarming story of a young Polynesian girl destined to save her people.
Eight years later Moana returns to the big screen, ready to embark on an even bigger adventure.
Moana 2 continues the legacy of its predecessor. Even though Lin-Manuel isn’t involved in the music for this installment, it doesn’t mean his influence isn’t there with plenty of catchy tunes throughout the film.
Three years after the events of the first film, Moana receives an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors and forms her own crew, reuniting with her friend, the demigod Maui.
As they journey to the far seas of Oceania to break the god Nalo’s curse on the hidden island of Motufetu, which once connected the people of the ocean, they confront old and new foes, including the Kakamora and underworld bat goddess Matangi.
The animation is simply breathtaking, with every frame showcasing the beauty and diversity of the Pacific Islands and vast ocean. The filmmakers have truly outdone themselves, creating a world that is both familiar and fantastical that we’d love to see more of.
Auli’i Cravalho returns to voice the spirited Moana, and her performance is as captivating as ever. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson also returns as Maui, the chaotic demigod with some seriously impressive tattoos.
Also lending their voices are Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Rachel House, and Alan Tudyk with Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, Rose Matafeo, David Fane, Hualālai Chung, Awhimai Fraser, and Gerald Ramsey joining the cast.
The story is both heartwarming and inspiring, exploring themes of identity, courage, and the power of connection. While it would help to have seen the first film, newcomers will happily dive into the action without this context.
Moana 2 is a must-see for fans of the original film and anyone who loves a good adventure. It’s a film that celebrates the beauty of the Pacific Islands and the power of human spirit and we think it will be an instant hit for the young and young of heart.
