Hallelujah! Sister Act Opens in Melbourne

Praise be! Sister Act is in Australia!

The divine musical comedy is loosely based on the 1992 film directed by Emile Ardolino and starring the fabulous Whoopi Goldberg about a singer who witnesses a murder and needs to be hidden away in the last place these criminals would look: a church with nuns!

This inspired musical has an entirely fresh soundtrack and has been entertaining crowds from Broadway to the West End for years, so my plus one and I had high expectations as we entered the beautiful Regent Theatre.

We were ready to be dazzled by the heavenly sounds of Sister Act.

Leading the angelic ensemble is the extraordinary Casey Donovan as the vivacious Deloris Van Cartier.

Joining her on this sacred journey are the iconic Genevieve Lemon as the stern but secretly soulful Mother Superior and the ever-fabulous Rhonda Burchmore as the sassy Sister Mary Lazarus.

These three powerhouse women absolutely deliver a performance that will leave you singing and swaying in the aisles.

We also loved Raphael Wong’s Eddie Souther, the cop (and childhood admirer) tasked with looking after Deloris. His solo song, complete with a very creative costume change, was one of the highlights of the night.

We also really loved the inventive use of the lighting and stage design, turning a huge arch into all manner of different sets from the back alley of a nightclub, to the cold and hard Parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow.

With a score by the legendary Alan Menken & Glenn Slater, Sister Act boasts a soundtrack that is both heavenly and funky. From soulful ballads to upbeat disco numbers, the music will have you tapping your toes and clapping your hands.

So, if you’re ready to experience a night of pure joy, book your tickets to Sister Act now.

It’s the perfect antidote to the everyday, a chance to escape reality and lose yourself in a world of laughter, a message of peace and acceptance, soulful music, infectious energy, and fabulous divine intervention. Hallelujah!
