Light Up Your Life at Lightscape 2024

Lightscape 2024 is lighting up the night at the Royal Botanic Gardens with dazzling new light displays. The artistic intersection of lights, sound, and nature melted my frozen Melburnian heart. Opening just in time for winter solstice, as we stare down months of long dark nights. Lightscape takes visitors on a 2km outdoor trail through the Botanic Gardens, with an impressive array of art installations illuminating the walk. In addition to the visual feast, a diverse array of music accompanies the artworks, with sweet melodies, disco fever dreams, romantic interludes, and dramatic overtures.

There was a chill in the air as I set out on my night trek through the gardens, making the mulled wine sold along the trail even more appealing. The evening experience takes about 1.5-2 hours to complete. If you find yourself needing some sustenance along the way, there’s a variety of food and drink options at the entry and in the middle of the gardens. (Including hot coals for toasting marshmallows!)

It’s a sweet spot for date night (hello mood lighting). And it’s also family friendly. After my atmospheric night in the gardens, I’m labelling it as a classic Melbourne event experience. Food, drinks, and unique ‘you had to be there moments.’ My plus one attempted to convince visitors the light cathedral was a great spot to propose. Whilst I pretended I was part of a casino heist as I deftly moved through laser lights in the fern forest. We encountered disco balls, glowing blossoms, and fire pots, and a thousand instagramable moments.

This was my first time experiencing Lightscape, but hopefully not my last. The event made its debut twelve years ago in the Kew Gardens UK. It’s proven to have international appeal: more than two million people experienced the illuminated trails across the world last season. It’s Lightscape’s third iteration in Melbourne, with an array of international and First Nations artists on display.

With all the food, lights, drinks, friends and families, it’s like Christmas in July.  Just remember to rug up!
