Lexicon Melbourne International Arts Festival

A Classic Night Out at Lexicon’s Contemporary Circus

We’re a bit spoilt when it comes to circus in Melbourne – with Circus Oz in residence, The Melba Spiegeltent hosting events year round, and emerging artists showcasing their talents during Melbourne Fringe. So when the Melbourne International Arts Festival decides to bring an international circus company to town, you know it’s going to be good.

Lexicon is a large-scale contemporary circus company from the UK and showcases an ensemble of talented international performers. Their latest spectacle proved to be the ultimate ‘date night’. It’s a show that’s suitable for both a hot night with a sexy lover or an outing with your grandmother. The production included beautiful imagery of performers soaring through the air, a live band, humorous stunts, and a touch of fire. Plus a small bar pouring drinks from local Melbourne winery, Noisy Ritual, and Sydney favourite, Archie Rose Distilling Co.

Lexicon Melbourne International Arts FestivalThe night started with a stroll through the Botanic Gardens, with the city lights twinkling in the background and a purpose built Big Top rising in front of me. The show is performed in the round (and in the air) with audience surrounding the circus ring on all sides. Many of the apparatus featured in the production are familiar circus tools – unicycles, aerial ropes, and Cyr wheels (large metal hoops). However, the performers are incredibly accomplished in their craft which allowed for both creativity and humour in their performances with these objects. The show is primarily experienced through sights and sounds, making Lexicon an excellent outing for both locals as well as international visitors. Since guests don’t need to be fluent in English to enjoy the show.

Standard ticket prices are $79-89 and are well worth it for with the 2+ hour performance Lexicon delivers.
