Mamma Mia! The Musical

If you think you haven’t heard of Mamma Mia! The Musical before then think again. This hugely successful musical based around ABBA’s many hit songs has been touring the globe for a number of years now with an estimated 60 million people seeing a performance! So why is this show so popular? Well besides having some of the catchiest songs of any musical (who hasn’t sang along to ABBA before), the musical is full of comedy, love, mystery and laughs. It’s a really fun time.

Set on a Greek island paradise, this heart-warming story centres around Sophie, a young bride-to-be who has never known her father. On the eve of her wedding, Sophie’s quest to discover his identity brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.

This brand new Aussie production stars the talented Natalie O’Donnell as mother-of-the-bride Donna Sheridan and Sarah Morrison as Donna’s daughter and bride-to-be Sophie. The wonderful Alicia Gardiner and Jayde Westaby star as Donna’s best friends Rosie and Tanya. You might remember Alicia from her time on Offspring and she is just as fabulous in this. We loved Jayde Westaby in this as well – her special number was a highlight of the performance and had the audience applauding for so long that she waved us off!

The three unsuspecting fathers played by Ian Stenlake, Phillip Lowe and Josef Ber were all perfect in their performances as well. If there’s one thing we could fault, it would be some of the dance numbers being a little repetitive – though this does little to dampen the mood. We hadn’t seen the stage play Mamma Mia! Or the movie before, so watching the play was a completely fresh experience. Sets, lighting and the excellent live score performed by a top-notch band all made the experience a wonderful one!

If you love the music of ABBA, or just want to have a nice family-friendly time out then we definitely recommend seeing Mamma Mia! The Musical.
