The story of The Albion is a true flames to phoenix saga with the original newly refurbished venue burning to the ground just two weeks before the scheduled launch in 2015. The devastation of losing the venue only brought determination to launch a bigger and better version in 2018.
Owner Matt Darcy (ex Anglers Tavern) has more than risen from the ashes with his launch of the new Albion, a multi-story institution with premium dining, intimate lounges, function space for up to 500, and a sparkling rooftop bar licensed until 5AM.
It’s the ideal lunch to after work drinks to nightclub venue. With close access to the South Melbourne Market, the chefs are focused on creating the freshest dishes with local produce. They often peruse the market gathering premium local ingredients, seeking inspiration for the ever-changing seasonal menu.
You will find things like dry aged beef shortloin with fennel salad and herb potatoes, miso glazed tofu topped with puffed rice and sesame, and crispy cider braised pork belly atop parsnip puree, all on the menu, designed for sharing.
The rooftop flaunts a beautiful marble bar with brass fittings, leafy greenery, and loungy seating set against the jaw dropping Melbourne skyline. Its bright, colourful, and stylish. There’s a dance floor with a bespoke sound system embedded in the ceiling that acts as a “speaker waterfall” allowing music to be played on the dance floor, yet maintaining a lower volume elsewhere, so patrons can converse in the social areas.
