Good design and good cocktails…do we really need anything else in life? The Design Files teamed up with Dan Murphy’s at the recent Open House pop-up to present an exhilarating evening of cocktail creation and design.
It was an immersive evening which began with me ogling over the stunning Open House design featuring an example home floorplan and design. I love events like this – I wander through the rooms, lie on the beds, sit in the chairs sipping cocktails and pretending it’s my own house.
We were greeted and guided by Charlie Ainsbury, co-owner of popular Sydney bar, ‘This Must Be The Place’. Charlie was named Australian Bartender of the Year in 2016 and 2014 for the Diageo World Class, won 2017 Time Out Best Cocktail Bar for ‘This Must Be The Place’, and is Dan Murphy’s newest Spirit Ambassador.
Charlie explained that cocktail making shouldn’t be a complicated and unachievable endeavour, and that his goal was to show us that cocktails can easily be made and enjoyed at home with a few simple steps and ingredients.
The focus was on cocktails that can be made with ingredients and spirits contained in most homes. We enjoyed a French 77, an amaretto sour, a paloma, and finally got to make our own Old Fashioned. One part spirit (whiskey, gin, rum or tequila), 10mL sugar syrup, 2 dashes of bitters, ice, and a garnish – easy! I was amazed at how quick and effortless this cocktail was to create, only requiring a few ingredients. I’ll definitely be doing more of that at home, and maybe one day I’ll be lucky enough to have one of the home bars featured at Open House!
