3 things we love about the new Nintendo Switch

There are a lot of perks of writing for The Plus Ones, from fancy restaurant launches to incredible interactive art experiences, we have done it all (all in the name of sharing what’s worth seeing with you of course!) This experience has to be one of our recent highlights though. Early one Saturday morning we were going to be one of the first people in the world to try the new Nintendo Switch! The much-hyped new console by the beloved Japanese company is a lot of fun. Here are three reasons why.

1: Games, games, so many games.

First up, we couldn’t go past Zelda: Breath of the Wild. During out 20-minute demo we got to explore new worlds (that look very pretty), fight some big monsters, and uncover some secrets. From talking to other players, we found that everyone had a different experience playing this game and there is a lot more to discover.

We also love the fun multiplayer missions in Splatoon 2 where you and your team compete to cover the arena in your team’s own colors. One of the most unusual games we played is Snipperclips where you and a friend need to solve a series of puzzles together by cutting shapes out of your adorable little avatars. This is one of the cutest and most interesting games we played.

2: Play at home or play on the tram

If you haven’t heard yet, this console is designed to be taken anywhere. We were a little skeptical about this, however in practice the Switch works perfectly as a grab and go console.

Essentially, you can have the Switch plugged into a dock and shown through your TV. When you need to move, there’s no need to pause the game – just grab the screen from out of the dock and it will automatically continue from where you left off. This was pretty impressive and worked perfectly for every game we tried it on. There are even a little kickstand, speakers, and controllers built in so you won’t forget any essential gaming component when you’re in a rush.

3: Unique ways to play

One of the games that will be launching with the console is 1-2-Switch. Essentially this is a series of mini-games for you and a friend to play together. The cool thing about these party games is that most of them only require you to hold a tiny, slim controller and look at each other – you won’t even need to watch the screen most of the time! Gunslinger lets you find out once and for all who would win in a Wild West shootout. We also thought the use of vibrations in the marble box mini-game was exceptional. This is a game you will need to try for yourself to experience the magic.

We are looking forward to the release of the Switch. It really does feel like a return to classic, fun Nintendo innovation.
