‘Ladies in Black’ at Regent’s Theatre

Are you a retro formal dress fanatic? Do you love Australian stories told in song and dance? Do you have youthful memories of working retail over the summer holidays? All these things are to be found in Queensland Theatre Company’s Ladies In Black, coming to Regent’s Theatre for three weeks in February 2017. The earliest showing of this new composition was named Best New Australian Work at the 2016 Helpmann Awards.

Think Priscilla, The Dressmaker, think Aussie women’s retro. This little gem and Cinderella parable is set in the women’s wear department of a major store in central Sydney, 1960. Following 17-year-old school graduate Lisa, learn of her journey of self-discovery couched within the serious counsel of her ‘women in black’ colleagues with their laments, laughs and advice.

Much like her heroine, Sydney-born writer Madeline St. John yearned for a university education, and went on to become a Booker Prize-nominated author. Set at the cusp of a new social era of women’s freedom, Lisa’s story resonates for a generation of women denied access to free education or lacking the social approval to remain unmarried or pursue a career.

Based on a 1993 novel, this musical features original compositions by Tim Finn and is directed by Simon Phillips. The decadently retro costumes by Gabriela Tylesova provide a concoction fit for any 1950s cocktail party! Welcoming new talent such as Sarah Morrison and starring Bobby Fox, the cast boasts many of our best theatre performers.

With its variety of characters, catchy songs, pathos, high fashion, and dash of larrikin Aussie humour, this show ticks all the boxes of a heart-rendering trip down memory lane. You won’t regret a minute of hearing the tales of these sales ladies – they sell more than mere clothes when they’re on the job!
