The Art of Banksy exhibition opens in Melbourne

The Plus Ones went on an expedition to a dodgy car park behind Federation Square to preview The Art of Banksy. Viewing the infamous street artist’s work was all the more visceral as the exhibit was still under construction at the time, with the smell of paint fumes wafting through the air. The popup tent at Fed Square hosts the largest collection of Banksy artwork to hit Australian shores. It’s also unauthorised. Steve Lazarides, Bansky’s first art dealer and curator of the exhibit, is no longer on speaking terms with the mysterious artist.

At the preview, Lazarides spoke about his previous work with Bansky and the intention of creating affordable art for the masses. Banksy’s pieces were designed to make owning and buying art accessible to the general public who were alienated from museums. (Unsigned prints were originally sold for £35.) Ironically, tickets to The Art of Banksy are $35.20 (with booking fee), and it’s in a gallery. So part of me was longing for immersive Bansky experiences like Dismaland (which cost punters £3 a pop) and dramatic live animal spectacles in downtown LA.

Despite the distinct lack of Bansky theatricality, it’s still thrilling to be in the same room as the artist’s originals. There are also photographs of Banksy installations that provide the only records of some temporary artworks. The venue is ticking the Melbourne boxes for creating a hip hangout space this summer, with local street artists’ work on display around the perimeter, Welcome to Thornbury food trucks, outdoor seating complete with AstroTurf, and a London Underground themed bar.

On one hand, the production smacks of a cash grab. (Lazarides is upfront that the exhibit is unauthorised and Banksy won’t be seeing a dollar.) However, the venture gives Melburnians a fantastic opportunity to see some iconic artwork. If you are a Bansky fan – GO. Just keep in mind one thing: you will exit through the gift shop.
