Vin Diemen: Showcasing Tasmania’s Fine Wines

The best food and wine from Van Diemen’s land is front and centre at Vin Diemen 2016. The event previously known as ‘Tasmania Unbottled’ is back in Melbourne, bringing some of Tasmania’s finest wines to the mainland for a one-day only event at the Meat Market in North Melbourne.

The Meat Market is a fantastic contemporary art space with ample room to showcase some of the Apple Isle’s finest. Tasmania has over 150 winemakers and this event highlights producers from each wine growing area.

My plus one and I were greeted at the door with beautiful keepsake wine glasses to use for tastings throughout the afternoon. With no tokens involved, I was in for a boozy, fun-filled day. Known for its cooler climate, some of the most common varietals out of Tasmania are Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris.

Some of my favourites from the afternoon included the Josef Chromy sparkling Rosè, premium Cuvee from Jansz and all of the cheese from the wonderful people at the Bruny Island Cheese Co. Named in honour of the first year the French set foot on Tasmania, the Bruny Island 1792 cheese is an absolute must-try in my opinion.

There were tastings aplenty and who am I to say no to vintage sparkling? After working up an appetite from drinking all that wine, there was plenty of opportunity to purchase some delicious snacks from Huon Tasmania. With bite sized servings of Wagyu meat pies, scallops and grilled octopus up for grabs, I was in foodie heaven.

If you love a tipple of vino blanco, then this event has your name all over it. There are also some options for lovers of red wine too. With fantastic cellar door prices and event specials, you can pick up a bottle or a case of wine for a great deal. I was spoilt for choice at Vin Diemen 2016 and look forward to its return next year.
