Avenue Q

Avenue Q at Her Majesty’s Theatre

Avenue Q is the Tony Award winning Broadway musical with puppets, monsters and humans in the backstreets of New York city.  The musical follows the wide eyed puppet Princeton who moves into Avenue Q after graduating college, it follows him trying to find purpose in life, falling in love and trying to find his place in the world. Princeton meets such characters as Kate Monster, Lucy the Slut, Bad Idea Bears, Trekkie Monster and many more characters. Avenue Q music and lyrics are by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx.

Do not be fooled, this is not a musical for kids, far from it with songs such as:

  • ´It Sucks to Be Me´
  • ´Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist´
  • ´The Internet is for Porn´
  • ´You Can Be as Loud as the Hell You Want (When You’re Makin’ Love)’
  • ´Schadenfreude´ – translated as pleasure derived from the misfortune of others

This is an Adults Only musical. There is also disturbing puppet nudity, but it is all in good fun and got a lot of laughs from the audience.

Now the one thing that amazed me was the puppeteers that were also on stage doing the puppetry. At first I thought this was not going to work, but amazingly the combination of the puppet and the puppeteer worked really well, which is all down to the amazing acting of the puppeteers themselves.

Director Peter Snee has done a fabulous job with a talented cast to present us with a musical full of risque topics with humans and puppets. With a limited season I would strongly recommend getting to this ASAP, that way you can enjoy some ´Schadenfreude’.
