Ninth generation winemaker Dominique Portet started his winemaking journey in Bordeaux, France and moved to Australia, where he has been making beautiful wines for 40 years. To celebrate this momentous occasion, the Portet family are hosting weekly ‘Raclette and Red’ sessions throughout winter at their cellar door in the Yarra Valley.
The intimate, terrace-style café at the cellar door serves a range of light foods that can be paired perfectly with the house wines. In addition to the standard menu offerings, each weekend in winter the menu features a different raclette variation, warmed and poured over cornichons, saucisson and pomme de terre. All of this is complemented with a beautiful side salad and topped off with a glass of the winery’s own cabernet sauvignon.
If the thought of warm melted cheese and a glass of liquid gold is not enticing enough for you, then there is the option to partake in a hosted wine tasting, browse a range of boutique French products, or explore the picturesque surrounds of the Portet winery.
During the wine flight the knowledgeable staff will take you through a range of the winery’s best, starting with their award-worthy rosé and ending with their award-winning cabernet sauvignon. I couldn’t resist walking away with a few bottles to enjoy later.
Tenth generation winemaker Ben Portet is now at the helm of the Dominique Portet winery and leads the charge in crafting their signature range of sparkling wine, sauvignon blanc, rosé, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon.
