Melbourne Cabaret Festival: #FirstWorldWhiteGirls

While I’m very aware of my privileged life here in inner-city Melbourne, the daily struggle with FOMO (fear of missing out) experienced by Kendall and Tiffany from The Melbourne Cabaret Festival’s show #FirstWorldWhiteGirls hit a cord with me.

I too have had the misfortune of tangled headphones when I wanted to listen to music on my iPhone, buying avocados that were just not ripe enough to eat straight away or not being at home when an eBay purchased parcel arrives in the mail. Don’t even get me started on the FOMO each one of the writers from The Plus Ones feels on a daily basis when we have too many events to go to in a single day. The struggle is real.

Fortunately for us Tiffany and Kendall, the stars of #FirstWorldWhiteGirls are sympathetic to the pain.  Hailing from Brisbane, the comedy-cabaret duo have been touring Australia with this show and are in Melbourne as part of the fantastic Melbourne Cabaret Festival at The Butterfly Club.

The show explores first world privilege and problems, told through the eyes of a trust fund princess and a day-drinking trophy wife. Their daily struggle with un-bespoke furniture, buying ‘stuff’ to fill the void in your life, and getting a Brazilian was all told through music.

As the two spray-tanned spoiled songstresses read out first world problems from the audience, to a soundtrack of Coldplay, some of the so-called ‘problems’ connected with me. I, too, have been frustrated with the amount of people travelling on the free trams in inner city Melbourne as I take the lazy option of not walking a single city block. I know the daily struggle of only having gone to Europe ONCE this year. As the two pointed out – first world problems are real problems.

Don’t live in FOMO – get to this show.
