AUSTiN‘s is the newly revived eatery alongside the Mt. Erica Hotel on High Street in Prahran. The restaurant gets its name from the son of the talented head chef Sunny Gilbert. The restaurant opened last week. To celebrate they invited along some of the biggest names in the Melbourne food scene and some local celebs for a champagne and canapés affair.
The restaurant has a focus on Mediterranean and Spanish flavours with rotating dishes to compliment Melbourne seasonally, along with some daily specials to spice things up. The menu will feature tapas, but also larger sharing items that is all the rage on the Melbourne food scene. As we know, we Melburnians love to be social and get to taste as many offerings a venue has rather then just single dishes.
The space is very comfortable, and will occasionally accompany the dinning experience with local musicians. The band on the night played a selection of upbeat rock covers that suited the social crowd.
Our favourites of the night were the roasted pork belly (always a Plus Ones favourite), grilled octopus, and the whisky cocktails. The canapés, champagne, and craft beers flowed generously through the evening which made for a very enjoyable night.
Our highlight of the night was meeting some of the regular performers at the venue, one of which was the brother of the lead singer of Hiatus Coyote who performed at the Sydney Opera House the previous night. I’m looking forward to returning to see the house bands in the near future.
From what we experienced of the night I couldn’t recommend a visit to this venue highly enough. It appears to have the right mix of experienced Melbourne restaurant and bar staff who were highly attentive and extremely friendly the whole evening. AUSTiN’s is a very welcome addition to the High Street scene.
