Sometimes lovingly referred to as ‘The Cement Doughnut’, the bagel has long since left its modest beginnings and transformed into a delicious vehicle used to transport oodles of delightful fillings into the eagerly waiting bellies of the people. My plus one and I were lucky enough to head down to Bagelicious Hawthorn for the unveiling and tasting of their brand spanking new night dining menu where we partook in a bagel degustation.
Before I take you through the happy snaps of my food journey, let me just say here that, boy was I glad I wore some stretchy pants! We started with some iced chocolates and coffees, wedges and dips followed by the Smoked Chicken and Mexican Chicken bagels.
The carb-loading continued with me trying the highly anticipated Burger Bagel – yep, BURGER. BAGEL. This ugly, delicious creation could possibly be the start of the end for the burger bun. Just sayin’.
After the shock of the Burger Bagel passed, I was hit with this:
This, ladies and gentlemen, is the peanut butter, M&M and chocolate flake bagel. I know, it sounds sickening. Yet I am glad to report that it was fantastic; the saltiness from the peanut butter and the crunch from the M&M toned down the overall sweetness of this bagel and took it from ‘hmm’ to ‘mmm’.
To end the night, we also got to try the Nutella, pretzel and marshmallow bagel. It would be a Nutella lover’s delight, but was just a bit too sweet for my liking.
Whether or not a bagel really is ‘a doughnut with the sin removed’ or not, this bagel bonanza was worth those extra calories and the extra runs I will be going on this week. Do yourself a favour, and go try that peanut butter bagel!
