One of the most anticipated Melbourne CBD openings of the year is St. Collins Lane. The brand-new luxury retail complex and food emporium fits into the refurbished building formerly taken up by Australia on Collins. I was thrilled to be included in the grand opening celebrations curated by Vogue and GQ, which featured a preview of the space, a fashion show, and one too many cocktails at some of their new luxury retailers.
I’d spent years walking through Australia on Collins to quickly get from Collins to Little Collins, often getting lost in the process. The tricky escalators and angled floors are now gone, replaced by easy-to-navigate floorplans that will get you from A to B quickly — and also entice you to stay longer to shop. Just like when Emporium officially opened, not every storefront is open. But that just means there will hopefully be mini launch parties as more and more luxury brands move in in the coming months. It will be fun to see it unfold this winter.
Everybody gazed at the piece de resistence, the thousands of green glass bottles hanging from the ceiling. They’re all LED lights, and are spectacular. That was before the fashion show. The crowd pushed back as the models descended on one of the elevators, sashaying around the centre of the building before stopping to pose. If the clothes are anything to go by, St. Collins Lane is going to have some stunning looks for sale.
We were treated to a veritable moving smorgasbord of food. Triple-tiered pushcarts moved through the crowd, chock-full of delightful canapes. In one corner: a dessert table. Drinks flowed in abundance until that moment where we were told to go downstairs for more (but not before picking up a giftbag). My friends and I found ourselves posing in front of a flower-bedecked wall at the new flagship Coach store. We headed inside to experience the beautiful leathergoods lining every inch of the walls. Cocktails in hand, we queued to get our initials monogrammed onto leather keychains. Just a little memento of a wonderful opening night at St. Collins Lane, and a sample of the luxury to come for all Melburnians.
