I’m going to start with how my night ended, which was by ruining my chances of chilling with Carl Cox later this year because I offended his ex by paying her out for not having Tram Tracker on her phone. However, this was swiftly surpassed by guzzling White Rabbit Brewing craft beers and splurging on a mouth-watering, expertly fashioned six-course Spanish food degustation from the AUSTiNS chefs at Mt Erica Hotel. It’s a fickle life.
Is there anything better than matching craft beer and fine food? Possibly this [ed: NSFW], but the answer is ‘no’. If we’re talking holy unions, White Rabbit and AUSTiNS were like the Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee of the food and craft beer world. Well-complimented, skilfully executed, and just damn tasty. Not to mention it was a beer-fortified menagerie: pigs, oysters, scallops, ducks, cows, and, of course, White Rabbits.
Now I’ve had my fair share of duck at joints like Da Hu, but AUSTiNS confit duck leg with rainbow chard matched with White Rabbit Flanders red sour ale — holy drake feathers, Batman. Just when you thought Daffy couldn’t possibly be bested, enter perfectly chargrilled Scotch fillet with White Rabbit Pale Ale.
But the standout for me: White Rabbit Bock Bock smoked lager with 70% smoked Manuka wood chips, which I savoured to be the last thing I drank. That way I could go out on a high if hit by a tram on the way home, or beaten up by Carl Cox.
Ate: White Rabbit beer-inspired Spanish food.
Drank: White Rabbit beer. The White Rabbit Bock Bock smoked lager. Aww shieet.
