Comedy Festival: Corey White – The Cane Toad Effect

Corey White is an engrossing storyteller and comedian, and if you’re looking for a commanding powerful show, filled with honest engaging admissions and heartfelt conclusions, then ‘The Cane Toad Effect’ is a show that needs to be seen before it ends its run. After winning Best Newcomer at last year’s comedy festival, Corey has returned for a short season this year; filling the large capacity space of the downstairs space of the Forum Theatre. It is a comedy career journey that is ultimately well deserved once the actual journey of the performer is laid bare, with background material that has to be experienced to see how comedy can be used as a vehicle to connect with issues rarely dealt with as congratulatory as this.

While many comics succeed upon the content and presentation of relatable stories, White has a wealth of endearing source material that will grip, surprise, and carry a crowd to a full understanding of the message at its heart. From a harsh and traumatic upbringing, to tales of addiction, mental welfare, betrayal and internal self-worth, the revelations entailed are brutally real, and subsequently, the humour that is expertly derived never feels out of place. White has created a masterpiece that will linger on your thoughts long after the show has finished, an accomplishment that reflects the success of a comedian absolutely solidifying his name in the industry.
