What happens when an asteroid hits Earth and a new species arises? It is something that I have pondered from time to time but I don’t think I have given it as much thought as Kate. In her Melbourne Comedy Festival show, aptly titled, ‘Shabamalam‘ – it just makes sense after you see the show – Kate explores these issues and several more.
The show is held in what I’m calling a secret Melbourne location. The ‘games room’ at ACMI. I didn’t realise there was such a room, but the intimate multi-coloured kaleidoscope forms a good setting for all that’s t0 come.
The performance has multiple characters, dance routines and songs. Kate splits her show into three areas: the human age, the immediate post-asteroid age and the deep, deep vastly superior future age. Particularly entertaining moments occur as the last human on Earth, an intern, is trapped down a mine, names herself CEO only to see the worms form a board of directors to gang up against her. Kate then takes us to the future where she has created a new world for us to explore together. Things get interesting when the new species brings back to life the fossilised remains of said intern.
