If you haven’t made plans this weekend you’re in luck because there’s an amazing jazz festival on, the inaugural St. Kilda Jazz Festival. Many of Melbourne’s most talented jazz musicians are performing south of the river and bringing the most sensational jazz with them!
Thursday night saw the saucy stylings of Peter Gaudion & friends playing to a packed house at Claypots‘ Ruby Gils Bar. Los Cojones followed up their performance with a swinging session that brought the house to the dance floor. Even the bar staff couldn’t resist dancing to a stylized jazz rendition of Lou Bega’s classic ‘Mambo No. 5’.
Friday night saw a very excited crowd grooving along to the Julien Wilson Quintet at the St. Kilda Sports Club. Julien’s engagement with the crowd was splendidly organic and the quintet’s performance absolutely on point. Incidentally they are officially launching their latest album, ‘This Narrow Isthmus’, at St. Kilda Summer Jazz!
Shows are on all over St Kilda (Laika Bar, St Kilda Sports Club (Bowlo), MEMO Music Hall, Prince Public Bar) from 2.00pm (many later shows around 7.30pm) and plenty are free or very reasonably priced. Check out the program for everything you need to plan plan your adventure.
Rian is a young lawyer who enjoys avoiding eye contact, playing guitar and reading, if you see him on the street, leave him alone!
St. Kilda Jazz Festival runs 3-6 March 2016 at venues throughout St. Kilda.
