By now Melbourne, you may have realised that we are in the grip of a burger craze in this fine city of ours. No longer are we resigned to the fish and chip shop on the corner or a greasy trip to McDonald’s to fill our burger-and-milkshake desires. The most recent addition to this manifestation of ground meat and artisan breads is Motorhome Majestic, who have set up camp in Ascot Vale.
Cousin to the wildly successful Truck Stop Deluxe and Grand Trailer Park Taverna, Motorhome Majestic continues the tradition of American burger culture, re-invented for the Australian market. Because if there’s one thing we can do better than America, it’s food.
The interior is decked out with re-fashioned motorhomes for booths – it’s light and airy and not at all like the classic 1950’s Hungry Jack’s interior, with a open-roof courtyard out the back. I recommend eating outside, burgers always taste better doused in sunshine. If interiors aren’t your thing, maybe bars are because Motorhome Majestic does not disappoint. Motorhome has paired Melbourne’s love of food with our equally passionate love of alcohol, serving up espresso martinis and margarita’s on tap (can i get a hallelujah), quirky cocktails and alcoholic milkshakes. Somehow, these wizards have made a milky, chocolatey cocktail without conjuring up the image of an 18 year old girl at a club.
Oh, and there were burgers. Big, juicy, cheesy burgers paired with ribs, sweet potato chips and mac ’n’ cheese balls. There’s a burger for everyone – even the vegetarians. The crowd was so enthusiastic at the opening there was a mob of food bloggers waiting outside the kitchen doors to snatch up everything as soon as it came out.
If you’re looking for the quintessential Aussie burger, this is not the place. There’s no beetroot or egg in sight on these burgers, nor chicken salt for your chips. But, there is a buttermilk chicken burger and two types of ribs on the menu. Did I mention the mac ‘n’ cheese balls? And don’t forget the plethora of meat-cheese-sauce-condiment combinations that will make you forget the fish and chip shop on the corner.
Charli is a creative writer, food lover, and Harry Potter aficionada in her last year of a History degree. She is sure she will find a way combine these things one day, to great success. If not, she’ll pack up and become a bartender somewhere in the Caribbean with a fabulous year-round tan.
Motorhome Majestic is open now on Union Road, Ascot Vale.
