Every year the we compare Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival with your Parises, your Milans and Japans, but this year we’re going to go out on a limb and suggest that after 20 years it’s come in to its own. Indeed, perusing this year’s program we’ve been hard pressed to choose a select few to sate your desire for all things fashion…but here they are anyway, The Plus Ones’ top five picks of VAMFF!
Opening Event Runways – Monday 7 March
Of course you can’t miss the Opening Event Runways on the 7th of March, all revolving around the Festival Plaza at the Royal Exhibition Centre (a destination in itself).
Cultural Program
For those of you into a more conceptual interpretation of fashion, there is something for everyone in VAMFF’s cultural program. We recommend checking out both 100 Chairs In 100 Days at RMIT from 25 February – 9 April (if only to see the myriad of crazy possibilities) and Fashion On Film down at ACMI from the 25 February – 14 March. Get ready for some stunning films featuring the work of Alexander McQueen, Givenchy and Jeremy Scott).
Head Babes in Charge – Sunday 28 February
The offsite runways can’t be missed either and if you’re going to choose just one we recommend heading down to Docklands on the 28th of February (even before the whole festival kicks off, delicious!) to check out the crazy glam — hell, some might say power glam — rock, and pop art runway of Head Babes In Charge.
Jean Paul Gaultier for Target Runway – Wednesday 9 March
Then finally if you have the readies (or cash, in the parlance of our times) why not splash out on the Jean Paul Gaultier for Target Runway at the Royal Exhibition Buildings on the 9th March. I mean, Jean Paul Gaultier, need I say more.

Ruth Saxon is an arts student who is currently busy establishing her accessories label in Melbourne after moving here from Perth (all roads…). She enjoys Pavlov’ing over fashion she couldn’t possibly hope to afford and sampling all that Melbourne has to offer in food and drink (and music and art…Melbourne, huh!?)
The Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival (VAMFF) runs 7-13 March 2016. Visit the full program to purchase tickets.
