‘LIMBO‘ is smoking hot. Literally. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that much fire in a theatre. This circus/cabaret show is simultaneously dark, sexy, and funny and it takes place in the perfect venue – the 1920s-inspired Speigeltent.
The fire-breathing performance is a perfect example of the risk-taking and theatricality that permeates this show. Flames burst a meter from the audience and cover the performers! I found myself alternating between laughing, clapping, and reminding myself that I should close my mouth after my jaw dropped.
The show features a live band, high production values, and international performers on top of their game. In addition to gapping at the impressive stunts, I also enjoyed ogling all the sexy bodies. Think six-packs, pin-up girls, and tattoos.
I don’t want to give away many details of the creative stunts filling the hour and fifteen minute performance. Trying to describe a trio of artists flinging themselves through the air on limber poles just doesn’t convey the same exuberant excitement created in the Speigeltent — the experience is far better in person. I will say that my plus one and I declared it an excellent night out… with one complaint. ‘LIMBO’ just ruined watching any other circus for me for quite a while. Thanks a lot for upping my standards!
The show is playing next to the Foxtel Festival Hub in the gardens just south of the Yarra. So you can grab a drink from one of the bars, throw back some tequila and tacos, and enjoy the spectacular view. The Melbourne Festival is rocking it with this cool date-night option. Madonna came to this twice. You owe it to yourself to come at least once.
Jenny Schmidt is an event addict. She has participated in arts festivals on three different continents (plus a couple of islands). When she’s not attending live shows, you can find her sampling the latest craft beer or sipping a classic cocktail.
‘LIMBO’ plays as part of the Melbourne Festival and runs through November 1st. Purchase tickets now.
