Gourmet Breakfast at Hash

I live and breathe brekky. My guilty pleasure? Omelettes for dinner. Exotic poached eggs? Maple bacon pancakes? Yes, please. Coffee? Don’t even get me started. Melbourne is naturally the best place to live if you have a love affair with mid-morning eateries. When I got invited to a menu tasting at Hash Specialty Coffee & Roasters, I was floored.

Tucked away in Hardware Street, Hash is the new and seriously trendy kid on the block. A triple threat in the breakfast category; specialty roasted coffee, tasty and exotic breakfast fare that is anything but ordinary and Melbourne’s most unique hot chocolate.

Head chef Adam Prukner guided us through a three course brekky tasting, while barista Ben Lou kept the coffee coming.

Leek and cheddar croquettes with tumeric poached eggs, foie gras sliders, coconut yoghurt pannacotta with toasted pistachios, pine nuts and chia seeds and perfectly crispy rice pudding brulee were all on the menu. All presented artfully, fusing unexpected flavours that made me feel like I was on a fine dining dinner date, rather that hanging out in a trendy breakfast café.

The fairy floss hot chocolate was a stand-out winner. Heads turned, conversations stopped and cameras emerged as the towering mug of fairy floss accompanied by a beaker of steaming Mork cocoa approached. It was an artistic sugary masterpiece that Willy Wonka himself would have done cartwheels over.

The waiter explained that the milk flavoured fairy floss is made in-house every night. Not an easy feat, when you can expect upwards of 100 orders in a day! Customers have even travelled all the way from the Yarra Valley to sip on one of these delicacies.

There is no easy way to assemble Hash’s hot chocolate. Watching the molten liquid devour the delicate fairy floss, melting together into my mug of cocoa was just as satisfying as the drink itself! Next time you find yourself in Hardware Lane or Street, pop into Hash for a soul warming, Instagram worthy drink, and some delicious brekky nibbles.
