Argentinian Nights: a Malbec tasting at Vamos

On a rather chilly and rainy Melbourne winter evening, my plus one and I were given the opportunity to sample some tasty and warming Malbec wines at Latin American restaurant and bar Vamos.

Malbec is an high-altitude, thick-skinned grape that is most common to Argentina. It’s known for its smooth, fruity notes and richness. Stepping into Vamos brought me back to my days of traveling in South America. The exposed brickwork, low lights, and wooden fittings create an ambiance that is cozy, rustic, and intimate. (Did someone say ‘Latin date night!?’)

To complement the romantic atmosphere, we progressed through a variety of exquisite wines — starting with rosé and sparkling Malbec varieties, finishing with ones fuller in body and colour. Along the way, former winemaker Stacey Sheppard from Untapped Fine Wines made sure that her audience was well informed about the origins of the wines and their historical and regional significance to Argentina.

It was a full house  and guests supplemented their wines with the traditional Latin American food served at Vamos. We left with some clear favourites and an intention to come back again for more delicious wine and food.

Vamos hosts regular wine tasting events with wines from Latin America and Spain. Check out their website for future events.
