Flying Duck Hotel launch in Prahran

Nestled away in the residential back streets of Prahran lies the Flying Duck Hotel. It’s an unsuspecting establishment. You may have walked past it before and not thought twice. Stepping inside, however, welcomes you into a world of tastes and sights that will dazzle your senses.

Sangria-infused watermelon, soft shell crab sliders, champagne, and espresso martinis were all on display at the Flying Duck launch party. Set to the background of acoustic drumming, the stunning beer garden warm spring evening made the party reminiscent of the perfect Sunday session.

The Flying Duck hasn’t always been this way. The history is quite fascinating. Established in 1868, it is one of the oldest hotels in Melbourne. The Duck was marked for demolition, but after overwhelming objections from the locals, the plans were canned and the Duck was purchased and renovated.

Flying Duck Hotel

I remember drinking at the Flying Duck a few years back. It felt like an old country pub – a homely establishment with basic pub fare meals, a no-frills interior, and pots of VB making the rounds. It was far cry from the trendy pubs where foodies congregate on Chapel Street.

Since then, The Flying Duck has had a serious makeover. Everything has changed — but the homely atmosphere that makes you want to call it your local remains. There is now a slick bar with brick backdrop walls giving it an urban, sophisticated feel. It’s the kind of place I would imagine New York bankers escaping their privileged lives to drink pints of microbrew, smoke cigars, and shoot the breeze alongside everyday locals.

The beer garden is especially spectacular. It’s arguably the best on this side of the river! Ancient palm trees line the garden with a glass greenhouse-style gazeebo to protect you from Melbourne’s crazy weather.

A welcoming atmosphere with an impressive menu and wine list makes The Flying Duck a MUST visit destination for all foodies, hipsters and locals wanting a memorable Sunday Session or cruisy after work drinks.
