Fringe Review: Abbott! the Musical

The 14th of September was like waking up from an extended bad dream, Abbott was finally out! That night my sharehouse was in rapture with the news…it was finally over. I was an Abbott hater since the beginning, so I jumped at the opportunity to cover ‘Abbott! The Musical’, which is currently playing as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. The show has been doing the rounds, including the Adelaide Fringe Festival earlier this year. I had only heard good things, so I had to check out what the fuss was about.

‘Abbott! The Musical’ was a fast-paced ride through the sometimes too funny to be true past two years of Abbott’s disastrous reign. One of the most ingenious parts of the show was the use of the quote board that flashed when ever a direct quote was used in the script, highlighting just how disturbing some of the things were that came out of that man’s mouth.

With the musical running just under an hour, they still managed to cover the highlights, or should I say low-lights of the past year, such as a song dedicated to his self-assigned position as Minister for Women called ‘Misogyny Me’ which had my plus one making up her own version after the show. Some rewrites were needed due to Tony’s recent departure that had the show ending in major celebratory mode.

My plus one and I continued the festive mood onto the bar for shots. This was my first time at Tuxedo Cat‘s new dig at the former Duke of Kent Hotel and so far I’m impressed with the retaining charm of the now-permanent location. I definitely recommend getting down to see this show or one of the many others happening at this venue for the Festival.
