There is a absolute appreciation in my books for somebody who is naturally skilful as a storyteller. Somebody who is able to weave tales of truthful encounters or grandiose experiences in such an engaging manner that you are hooked, no matter whether the actual content has any solid foundation. To be able to have a comedic charisma to carry it through is an absolute boon, and Dan Pavatich has that in abundance. He has stories to be told during this Fringe Festival, and he knows how to masterfully present them. In this case, it is also fortunate that the material has absolute substance. In ‘Dan Pavatich’s Big Strong Boy’, it is all win-win.
Dan has a natural ability to make you laugh. There is no real deliberate push or built up punchlines forced into the vulnerable tales he weaves during his show; it is an honestly engaging and humble fifty minutes of pure delight and well connected feels that had the audience consistently laughing throughout. It is simply staged, yet expertly rehearsed, down to the timing of the blackouts and the shift in stage positioning when the truth briefly overrode the humour present in a given situation. Dan is slick with his delivery, smooth when he slips off on a tangent, (especially those that are hilariously unintentional), and above all, never needs to exceed his natural gift to create a wonderful sense of empathy with the audience as they laugh, nod, and absorb what is on offer. There are stories about love, about family, acceptance, identity, and embarrassingly hard roads. You may think you’ve heard it all before, but you haven’t. Come and see for yourself. This is top of the range.
