Prepare for a uniquely immersive experience with Hendrick’s Gin and their Sensorial Submersion Event in Edinburgh this year.  A Sunday night found me wandering up to 91 George Street to be welcomed by the Professors in residence.  Hendrick’s have taken over a town house in order to take you on a journey through a number of rooms each ready to thrill you with a unique sensorial experience and a delicious cocktail.  Upon arrival you’ll find yourself welcomed with and a gin & tonic to start you on your way before being whisked off to the “Quietest Bar on Earth” for another cocktail and an investigation into sound and taste.

My favourite room was entitled the ‘Audio-gastrorium Laboratory’ where you enter a 1950s classroom complete with school benches where you perch to listen to the Chemistry Professor involve you in an original experiment.  The room itself is a treat with an original blackboard, bunsen burners and overhead projector (who knew they still sell acetate slides?!).  Beakers and viles filled the tables containing coloured liquids for you to taste reminiscent of a Breaking Bad episode.  I’ll leave you to enjoy the experiment which takes place but it was a fascinating insight into the effect that colour and sound play in affecting our perception of taste.

This is genuinely my favourite event at the festival so far, I can’t recommend it highly enough.  Tons of thought has gone into creating a brilliant couple of hours and considering this includes 4 cocktails, £24 is excellent value for money.  I’m sure you won’t leave disappointed.  If you can’t make the event, you can even pop into the building and enjoy a cocktail in a gorgeous bar gazing out onto the excitement of George Street.  Gin has never tasted so good…
