Flow After Dark Silent Disco Yoga

I don’t normally wear makeup to yoga, obviously. But getting to attend Flow Athletic’s Glow in the Dark Silent Yoga Disco called for a bit of effort. Armed with a yoga mat and a passable downward dog, I headed to Melbourne Town Hall to join 400 other yogis in what would be my first silent yoga class.

Arriving at the iconic venue, I was greeted with glow sticks and queued up to enter the big, beautiful hall. I rolled out my yoga mat, popped on my Glow in the Dark headphones and was ready for some much needed Tuesday night relaxation. As the lights went down and the room became silent, all I could see was the gentle, blue glow of 399 other pairs of headphones. Kate Kendall, Australia’s leading yoga guru, took the stage to guide us through the class, and, suddenly, her soothing voice and the calming tunes of DJ James Mack swept all other thoughts out of my head.

The hour and a half yoga session flew by which is not to say it wasn’t a challenge. My core was fired up, my quads felt the burn and my triceps tingled but it was the kind of yoga that doesn’t take itself too seriously. When things got tough, Kate encouraged us to shake our bums and wiggle our spirit fingers. Maybe it was Kate’s peaceful voice, the beats pulsing through my headphones, or the calming effect of the darkness but I was truly immersed in the experience. By the time we took things down a notch for our final savasana, the room was buzzing with good vibrations.

After rolling up our mats, my plus one and I finished off the evening with my first turmeric latte from Golden Grind, and I could see what all the fuss is about. Slightly sweet and earthy with a hint of spice. Oh, yum. We also snagged a gift bag from our hosts, Flow Athletic and Stylerunner, filled with tasty goodies and even some dry shampoo for après yoga when your hair needs some love.

It was a night of firsts for me. I left Flow After Dark glowing.
